What is limestone?

Limestone is a sedimentary rock composed of a variety of minerals, including aragonite and calcite. Formation of this type of rock was common in marine environments abundant with coral reefs and sea life, which is why so many of the limestone paving products you see today have fascinating remnants of fossil-like details that add to its unique charm.

Usually found in elegant light shades of grey and white, limestone can also contain reddish tints effected by mineral traces of iron and manganese, but some types of limestone paving slabs are almost black in colour. These darker tones are caused by the rock forming in deeper waters or from higher levels of organic matter, such as carbonaceous mud.

Can limestone tiles be used outside?

Due to the nature of its formation through pressurisation in the seabed, limestone tiles are highly durable. As a result, they are ideal for all types of outdoor stone paving projects.

One thing to bear in mind, however, is that limestone is a porous rock. If you want to preserve its appearance and protect it from staining, sealing is advised.

Sandstone is another sedimentary rock composed of all the minerals found in sand. Originating from submerged land beneath the ocean floor, lakes, and rivers, it is formed through compression over hundreds of thousands of years.

Is sandstone porous?

Like all types of sedimentary rock, sandstone is porous. Whether you decide to seal it or not is a personal choice. Unsealed stone patio slabs will naturally age and be subject to discolouration over the years. Sealing a stone slab, on the other hand, will protect it against staining and dirt ingress.
