Home to Scarlett and her partner, Sam, their beautiful Victorian terrace renovation has been a labour of love, restoring a neglected house into a well-loved home that is full of colour and joy. Located in the stunning city of oxford, the couple were keen to bring the property to life with the same warmth and character of the city. From playful vintage pieces to bold design choices, their renovation journey has been all about injecting warmth into every corner, including the garden.

“Our home is an old Victorian terrace, and since moving here we have worked hard to restore it’s warmth and charm!”

When the couple first moved into their home in 2023, the garden was overgrown and neglected, without any existing tiles or patio at all – making the space somewhat redundant and unusable. But to Scarlett, that blank canvas was full of potential.

“Last summer we gutted the kitchen, knocked through an old bathroom and opened up the back of the house with double doors to flood the newly installed kitchen with light.”

With the new kitchen in place, the garden quickly became the next focus. Scarlett, @scarlettsdreamhouse, describes her style as colourful, optimistic and vintage; a common thread that flows throughout her entire home beautifully. And the garden was to be no exception.

“I love sourcing second hand goods to display, and our home is full of joyful colours and trinkets and treasures. We installed the patio of our dreams in a geometric check style, alternating two different colour tiles! It’s so fun and such a statement!”

Inspired by vintage pattern and playful contrasts, Scarlett created a checkerboard-style patio using two 60x60cm square paving tiles. Laid diagonally, the pattern adds dynamic movement and character while the neutral tones keep the overall look soft and elegant. Carefully considered details highlight the stepped area of the patio in a cohesive way, balancing and breaking up the pattern while also maximising functionality through clever design choices.
